The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved several new medicines that will be marketed as Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra.
The new drugs, which will be sold in Canada and the U. for about $7 per pill, include an "e-prescription" drug for erectile dysfunction and a "generic" drug for male impotence, according to a press release.
The drugs include an erectile dysfunction pill for men, an erectile dysfunction drug for women, a prescription for erectile dysfunction and a generic drug for male impotence.
The FDA said it was reviewing the applications for the products.
"Today's approval marks an important step in the development of innovative medicines for the treatment of erectile dysfunction," said Dr. Sidney Wolfe, director of Public Citizen's health research group. "We hope that this approval will encourage other health care providers to take advantage of available resources to market their products, which would enable them to prescribe these medicines as recommended by physicians."
Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra are the most commonly prescribed ED drugs for people with erectile dysfunction.
Erectile dysfunction is a condition that affects up to 80 percent of men. It can affect a man's ability to achieve and maintain an erection when sexually stimulated.
Erectile dysfunction is common, and it is not the first sign of underlying health problems, said Wolfe.
"This approval is a major step forward in the development of effective treatments for erectile dysfunction," he said.
While some of the drugs are being studied and marketed, the FDA has not yet issued a recommendation for use in the U.
The new drugs are expected to be sold in Canada and the U. for about $7 per pill.
"These drugs are generally considered the best available treatment for erectile dysfunction," said Wolfe.
Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra were approved by the FDA in 2003.
They are also the most widely used treatments for erectile dysfunction, and are also being studied and marketed. There are currently over 300 of these products available in the U. and several of these are being sold in Canada.
In addition to the approved products, the FDA has also issued a public health advisory for all new drugs.
In the past two months, the agency has warned consumers about the risks of taking the drugs.
"We are having trouble getting these drugs into the system in the U. because of this. We do not know whether these drugs will be approved in the U. for a variety of reasons, including not being able to get approval for them in the U. S., and if so, how and when they are to be approved," said the FDA.
In a statement, the FDA said: "The product labels for both these products do not cover or warn consumers of the increased risk of heart disease and other serious adverse effects of these products that could occur with prolonged use or in patients with existing heart disease, such as recent heart attack or stroke."
FDA spokesman Dan Watts said the agency is reviewing the applications.
Pfizer Inc. spokeswoman Roselyn Wieland said the company's decision to market the drugs came after several studies and clinical trials failed to demonstrate that the drugs were effective in treating erectile dysfunction.
Women are also being studied to see if they can take the drugs.
Pfizer says it is working with physicians to develop new treatments that would improve sexual function and improve overall sexual health.
The FDA said it is reviewing the products.
